Fake tan preparation tips

With any sort of tanning you need to prepare yourself for the task ahead. It's the same with any task you do, preparation is always key. But: "how do I prepare for a fake tan?", I hear you ask. Well there are few steps that you need to take to ensure that you get an even and natural-looking tan.

Firstly, the one thing that fake tan newbies are not so aware about is the art of exfoliation. Exfoliating your skin before any kind of tanning process is one of the most important things that you can do. It removes the top dead layer of skin and leaves a soft new layer for the tan to take to. Any ingrown hairs will also be removed and bought out ready for hair removal. Exfoliation needs to be done at least 24 hours before you apply your tan and will ensure that your tan is prolonged.

Hair removal also needs to be done at least 24 hour prior to tanning, especially if you wax or epilate as you need to give your pores the chance to close. Whilst shaving is not as big of a process as waxing or epilating, it still needs to done at least 24 hours before, this will give you the optimum surface to apply the fake tan. This also applies for sunbed users as waxing can remove the top layer of dead skin, so waxing after a sunbed could result in you losing your tan.

Moisturisation and hydration is also an important factor for any type of tanning whether it be sunbeds or self tan. You need to drink plenty of water beforehand as a hydrated body will result in hydrated skin, this will prolong your tan. Patchy tans are the result of dead, dry and flaky skin, something that you need to avoid to keep your golden glow. Use a good moisturiser both before and after you have tanned. Before you tan, but after you have waxed and exfoliated, ensure that you moisturise your entire body. It is important to take extra special care around the knees and elbows as they can become especially dry and if you are a fake tan user you don't want the tan to collect and make them darker than the rest of you.

If you are venturing out to get a professional spray tan or salon tan, applying a slight amount of vaseline on the eyebrows and hairline can stop a brown build up, tell tale signs of a fake tan. It is also a good idea to wear loose baggy clothing as fake tan can stain your clothes. Don't turn up in your skinny jeans as you don't want the base colour of tan to smudge and leave you streaky.
